It's that time of the year again! The CrossFit Games have returned to Carson, CA. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to the games until Saturday but I was lucky enough to get my hands on gold passes earlier this week! In the photomontage I edited below are photos of my family from the first day of events that began at Hermosa Beach.
Stay tuned for more and follow me on Instagram @RaymondRoman.
This past weekend my family and I went out to eat at Rockin' Baja Lobster on 5th Ave. in Downtown San Diego.
While we spent our Saturday afternoon in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, we spontaneously had a photo shoot with the iPhone. It was pretty fun just walking around "America's Finest City" taking pictures. The cool thing about todays technology is we have the freedom to take pictures continuously than if we were taking photos on film. Some might argue over the pros and cons of film vs. digital photography, but in this case digital was more convenient for this situation. It's amazing how sufficient the iPhone can be when it comes to taking photographs. If you're in a well lit environment or daylight situation you can capture some decent quality images. Although you don't have full control of how the image turns out, you could always make adjustments in Photoshop if necessary. Checkout some of the photos below and I encourage you to go out and take some family photos!
Well that was quick -- recently I was having issues with my computer so I thought I was going to be prevented from editing videos but I got everything fixed rather quickly! The issue was with my hard drive, luckily I didn't lose anything but it was a bit of a headache getting things working again. I was unable to startup my computer so I went to the Apple store to discover what the problem was. Luckily I was able to save my media from my drive by connecting my iMac to another iMac which makes my drive show up on the desktop like an external drive would. At this point I was able to plug in an external drive (which I had to go out and buy) and copy my files over. I was able to transfer my media overnight, took my computer back to the Apple store the next day and I had my computer back the following day. Again -- I ran into another problem! I was unable to install Final Cut Pro from my discs. I had to take back the iMac to the Apple store and discovered there was a problem with my optical drive. Unfortunately my Apple care had ran out and the best option for me was to buy an external disc drive. At this point I was feeling hopeful that I would be editing soon but I ran into one last problem. Apparently the Apple USB SuperDrive's are meant for MacBook Pro's. Thankfully the internet has the answer to many questions and I was able to make it work for my iMac.
Now I can begin editing again! I put together a quick video after fathers day for my Instagram account.
Yesterday was officially the 'first day of summer' (June 21). Here's another short video I put together for my Instagram account enjoying the summer sun -- I actually dislike being in the sun but once you're done working out it's all worth it.
I enjoy putting these videos together to showcase on Instagram. I think it's good practice for video editing and also I enjoy it because sometimes I wish I could make full on music videos to some of my favorite songs.
It's been a couple weeks since I've made a blog post so I thought I should write a little somethin'. Whenever I get the chance (usually between projects) I create experimental videos to play with ideas, and continue to grow as a filmmaker. Below are a few clips I created specifically for Instagram because you're only allowed to post 15 seconds videos. My goal was to come up with something creative, and entertaining within the limitations of the application.

The 2014 CrossFit Games are over. It's time for regionals! Are you drinking your Caffeine and Kilos PR Blend? Eric Roman is and he's smashing PR's. I put this video together with my younger brother this weekend before he finished the last CrossFit Open workout. I really enjoy Caffeine and Kilos coffee, give it a try!
Last night the Film Consortium of San Diego held the first ever San Diego Film Awards at the Horton Grand Theatre. I directed and edited the music video for Monkeys In Space "Supermodel Suitcase" which was nominated for best cinematography in the music video category.
This event would not have been possible if it wasn't for founder of the Film Consortium Jodi Cilley, the FCSD members, and volunteers.
Certainly this festival will continue to grow, it was an honor to be a nominee for this first time event! It's nice to know that in the future more local filmmakers and talent will have the same opporuntiy that I had last night. Lookout for the new Monkeys In Space album "Kill Your Past" coming out later this month at Facebook.com/MonkeysInSpace and you can watch the Monkeys In Space "Supermodel Suitcase" below.

My younger brother completed the 14.1 CrossFit workout this morning. The workout is 10 minutes AMRAP (as many reps as possible) of 30 double-unders, and 15 power snatches at 75lbs. This is his second attempt this week because the first video we submitted was declined due to a few details we missed. I'm so proud of him, his original attempt was 259 reps and just 3 days later he reached an official count of 267 reps! Checkout the full video below.
Working out is something I've always done ever since I was a teenager. These past couple of years CrossFit has been rapidly growing; some might say CrossFit is the fastest growing sport at this moment in time.
My younger brother has been in love with the sport the past couple years and has picked up the proper technique rather quickly. He's been teaching me his knowledge, and has been a motivation for me to stay active.
Here's the workout regime he put together for me yesterday.
WOD #1 3 rounds for time (10 minute time cap): -25 meter down-and-back sprints (50 meters total -10 burpees -7 clean and jerk at 135lbs.
WOD #2 For time interspersed (17 minute time cap): -12, 9, 6, 3 deadlifts at 155lbs. -40, 30, 20, 10 air squares
WOD #3 For time: -run 2 miles
I woke up Sunday morning to a text message that said "welcome to hell". This WOD might not be hell for the elite athlete, but my brother is aware of my weaknesses, and trying to help me push myself to improve. After completing the first WOD I felt like giving up. It was hell, but I continued on and ended up having a great day!
Although I exceeded the time cap in the first WOD, I decided to complete the workout even though the purpose of a time cap is to increase your intensity to complete the WOD within the given time.
I'm 100% positive if my brother was training with me on this day he would have made me stop and move on, but I was already feeling 'broken' so I forced myself to finish the workout.
The second WOD involving deadlifts and air squats wasn't so bad for me as the clean and jerks were in the first workout. I definitely felt the pain though when I ran 2 miles for the final WOD. Surprisingly, I got one of the best times I've had running in years!
“Whatever you want from exercise comes faster with intensity. It’s not volume or duration or heartrate or even discomfort. Do more work in less time (without overdoing it), and you’ll get fitter faster.”
— CrossFit Journal
The intensity of training CrossFit has allowed me to see results I've been missing over the years by simply just weightlifting. I will continue to post more clips of my training, and hopefully will continue to grow as I share my experience.
This is a highlight video of some of the work I shot and edited this year.
I'd like to continue editing something like this together every year as I have done in the past. Checkout the first 'Looking Back' video from 2009 below.
