Experimental Videos for Instagram

by Ray Roman in , , , , ,

It's been a couple weeks since I've made a blog post so I thought I should write a little somethin'. Whenever I get the chance (usually between projects) I create experimental videos to play with ideas, and continue to grow as a filmmaker. Below are a few clips I created specifically for Instagram because you're only allowed to post 15 seconds videos. My goal was to come up with something creative, and entertaining within the limitations of the application.

2014 San Diego Film Awards

by Ray Roman in , , , ,

Last night the Film Consortium of San Diego held the first ever San Diego Film Awards at the Horton Grand Theatre. I directed and edited the music video for Monkeys In Space "Supermodel Suitcase" which was nominated for best cinematography in the music video category.

This event would not have been possible if it wasn't for founder of the Film Consortium Jodi Cilley, the FCSD members, and volunteers.

Certainly this festival will continue to grow, it was an honor to be a nominee for this first time event! It's nice to know that in the future more local filmmakers and talent will have the same opporuntiy that I had last night.  Lookout for the new Monkeys In Space album "Kill Your Past" coming out later this month at Facebook.com/MonkeysInSpace and you can watch the Monkeys In Space "Supermodel Suitcase" below.

Special guest star presenters include TV and film actors Kimberlin Brown (Emmy nominated for Sheila Carter-Young & the Restless), Jose Yenque (Traffic), Marc McClure (Superman, Apollo 13). Kimberlin Brown Jose Yenque Marc McClure Host for the show is longtime radio and newspaper personality, Chris Cantore a UT-TV Host and Night & Day Editor as well as long-time San Diego radio on air talent. Featured presenters include many community leaders and local celebrities Joe Terzi (San Diego Tourism Authority), Wally Schlotter (celebrated San Diego Film Commissioner), William Lansdowne (San Diego Police Chief) Allison Andrews (San Diego Fashion Week) Scott Marks (San Diego Reader), George Varga, (2 time Pulitzer nominee & UT Music Critic), John Decker (KPBS Program Director), Larry Groupe (movie composer – Usual Suspects) and more top award winning directors, filmmakers and dignitaries including Police Chief William Lansdowne. Eric Roman 14.1 CrossFit Open Workout

by Ray Roman in , , , ,

My younger brother completed the 14.1 CrossFit workout this morning. The workout is 10 minutes AMRAP (as many reps as possible) of 30 double-unders, and 15 power snatches at 75lbs. This is his second attempt this week because the first video we submitted was declined due to a few details we missed. I'm so proud of him, his original attempt was 259 reps and just 3 days later he reached an official count of 267 reps! Checkout the full video below.

12/22/2013 WOD "Welcome to Hell"

by Ray Roman in , , , ,

Working out is something I've always done ever since I was a teenager. These past couple of years CrossFit has been rapidly growing; some might say CrossFit is the fastest growing sport at this moment in time.

My younger brother has been in love with the sport the past couple years and has picked up the proper technique rather quickly. He's been teaching me his knowledge, and has been a motivation for me to stay active.

Here's the workout regime he put together for me yesterday.

WOD #1
3 rounds for time (10 minute time cap):
-25 meter down-and-back sprints (50 meters total
-10 burpees
-7 clean and jerk at 135lbs.

WOD #2
For time interspersed (17 minute time cap):
-12, 9, 6, 3 deadlifts at 155lbs.
-40, 30, 20, 10 air squares

WOD #3
For time:
-run 2 miles

I woke up Sunday morning to a text message that said "welcome to hell". This WOD might not be hell for the elite athlete, but my brother is aware of my weaknesses, and trying to help me push myself to improve. After completing the first WOD I felt like giving up. It was hell, but I continued on and ended up having a great day!

Although I exceeded the time cap in the first WOD, I decided to complete the workout even though the purpose of a time cap is to increase your intensity to complete the WOD within the given time.

I'm 100% positive if my brother was training with me on this day he would have made me stop and move on, but I was already feeling 'broken' so I forced myself to finish the workout.

The second WOD involving deadlifts and air squats wasn't so bad for me as the clean and jerks were in the first workout. I definitely felt the pain though when I ran 2 miles for the final WOD. Surprisingly, I got one of the best times I've had running in years!

Whatever you want from exercise comes faster with intensity. It’s not volume or duration or heartrate or even discomfort. Do more work in less time (without overdoing it), and you’ll get fitter faster.

The intensity of training CrossFit has allowed me to see results I've been missing over the years by simply just weightlifting. I will continue to post more clips of my training, and hopefully will continue to grow as I share my experience.

Looking Back at 2013

by Ray Roman in , , , , , , , , ,

This is a highlight video of some of the work I shot and edited this year.

I'd like to continue editing something like this together every year as I have done in the past. Checkout the first 'Looking Back' video from 2009 below.

10 Year Anniversary of the San Diego Cedar Fire

by Ray Roman in , ,

I can't believe it's been 10 years since the cedar fire. I remember waking up on the morning of October 26, 2003 and seeing the sky filled with smoke. I had no idea what was going on, but I decided to grab my video camera and document my experience.  Below is a video I put together the week of the fires.

A Trip To Texas (April 2013 Mini-Documentary)

by Ray Roman in , ,

The past couple months I've been putting together this video of a trip my sister and I took to Texas to visit our grandparents. It seems like everybody has home videos but no one really does anything with them, so I thought I would edit together a "mini-documentary" highlighting our trip. I'll be visiting again soon, can't wait to see them!
